The REF Veritechs (Corrected)

By: Stan Bundy

Version 4.0 (06/21/2000)

While Kevin Siembieda was telling the truth when, on page 5 of the Invid Invasion source book, he said "ALL of the mecha, weapons, vehicles and equipment found in this book can be seen in the T.V. series" (emphasis his), it is obvious that he did not spend much time examining the series as he needed to, as several obvious weapon systems were left out of the Veritech descriptions, and others are totally mislabeled.

For example, former Palladium employees Jeff Gomez and Kevin Long (who worked on the Robotech line, among others) told me in 1989 that Palladium was still receiving (on average) two letters per week asking why the Beta arm cannons were not described in the game. This was more than TWO YEARS after Invid Invasion came out! Nor were the two VTs' jet-mode guns ever described, even though both were shown in use. As most fan-made tapes of the series often cut out the credits, I can understand how the Alpha lasers may have been missed, as they appear clearly only in the closing credits. But missed in viewing ALL 85 episodes?

Likewise, the Beta leg cannons are only clearly shown firing in episode #76, volleyed with the body's GU-XX, and you have to slow the tape down to tell the two weapon systems apart. Still, in every drawing of these two mecha, the guns are clearly shown. In fact, what Palladium thought were leg missile launchers on the Beta are actually the ammo hatches for the leg-mounted GU-XXs.

Even the Invid RCBs are shorted, having a head laser shown in action on the series, but never put into the game; but as this article is on the REF Mecha, I'll close the book on the RCB laser by saying here that it does 4D6 MD, and has a range of 2000 feet. Plus, there are several other mecha shown in the series that have not been seen in the game, but I've converted elsewhere - see the GF-4 and VAF-5SB in the article The Southern Cross Handbook: Prototypes and Stopgap Measures.

Most likely, Kevin and the rest were too busy trying to ready Rifts for publication to really do an in-depth study of the last ten episodes, and it's hard for even die-hard fans to find technical data for Mospeada, and even that info is incomplete, and sometimes doesn't even match the art!

This article contains a system for customizing the REF Veritechs (Alpha, Beta & Cyclone) to fit YOUR idea of what they should be. All the weapons mentioned in the RPG, comics, novels, Mospeada source material, even the opening & closing credits, are described herein, along with how to fit them together and standard set-ups for popular versions of the mecha.

The Vindicator:

Going to the opposite extreme, I have included two variations on the VF-1V Vindicator, which purists say doesn't exist in the anime. The mistake comes from episode #84, when an artist made an error in scale when putting the Shadow Alpha in the same frame as Cyclones.

Besides, the mecha whose visual design is identified as the human-piloted VAF-7 is actually the robotic variant of the VAF-7, with no pilot at all (the reason why Lancer and Scott had no problems blowing them away when in the hive defending the Regis' departure). The two types here would replace the version in the game, as the RPG version is an anachronism. It was supposedly developed to fight Zentraedi, yet it is armed to fight Invid. The first type does not have a shadow device or disruptor, but does fit the anti-Zentraedi role, using RDF-era SRMs. The second uses makes use of the much smaller REF MRMs in the same configuration as the version listed in the RPGs, and has the shadow device and EU-12.
